Some users of the social network X, formerly called Twitter, received an email about a possible security incident on the platform. The messages were forwarded by the company last Wednesday night (24).

“We contacted you because Your X account could potentially have been affected by a security incident that occurred earlier this year (June 2024)” the message says.

The problem may lie in a change introduced on the platform in June this year, which involved hiding the “likes” of users on the social network. However, the transition has caused some of these likes to have “remained open to the public“to other people for a while.

“We have conducted a thorough investigation to understand how this occurred and have resolved the issue. OX is committed to protecting the privacy of people who use our service and we understand the risks that an incident like this, no matter how small, can pose,” the email reads.

What exactly happened?

Interestingly, in a search on social media for excerpts of the statement, only Brazilian users reported receiving the email. Searches for similar terms in English do not return the most recent results related to the platform.

However, it has not yet been possible to verify this information or obtain further details about the incident. Moreover, X has not commented publicly on what happened so far – and the social network since the beginning of Elon Musk’s administration does not generally respond to press requests.

The company has made a Privacy Form available to users with “questions or concerns” about the incident. You can submit a request directly to the X Data Protection Office via this link to the platform’s help center.
