After months of waiting, OpenAI has finally unveiled a prototype search engine called SearchGPT. The search engine, which promises to rival Google, uses artificial intelligence to extract real-time information from the internet.
It’s possible the tool won’t even make it to its final, publicly available form. OpenAI admits that SearchGPT is a temporary prototype, and the plan is to integrate the best features directly into ChatGPT, the generative AI that has made the company’s name in recent years.

Unlike traditional Google’s offering, SearchGPT’s goal is not to provide a list of links that are relevant to your search. Instead, the tool attempts to provide an answer to your question. The platform displays a summary of the information the user is looking for, followed by a link to the source.
This is a similar principle to the AI Overview policy already implemented by Google outside Brazil, which has sparked controversy due to highlighting misinformation.
The search engine can understand the context of the search to answer questions in order, preserving the conversational structure, as in ChatGPT. In one example, the tool shows the user what tomatoes they can plant in the state of Minnesota in the United States. The user then asks, “which ones can I plant now?” and the AI can preserve the context of the conversation and show “the best tomatoes to plant in Minnesota in July.”
For now, SearchGPT is just an experiment and very few users are able to test it. The tool is only available to 10,000 users in this initial phase, but interested parties can sign up for the waiting list now.
