FIFA’s disciplinary committee found the Canadian team guilty of spying on its opponents. The sanctions go beyond fines and points deductions: head coach Beverly Priestman, assistant coach Jasmine Mander and analyst Joseph Lombardi are banned from any football-related activity for a year.

Despite the controversy, the team recorded a 2-1 win against New Zealand in their opening match on July 25. The team has group matches against France and Colombia ahead of them.

During a training session in Saint-Etienne on July 22, New Zealand representatives spotted a drone flying near the pitch. The drone operator was revealed to be Joseph Lombardi, an unaccredited analyst with the Canadian Soccer Association.
