Since January, more than 15,000 cases and 461 deaths have been reported, spreading from endemic areas such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to 13 other African countries, including Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi and Uganda.
Unlike the 2022 pandemic, which was largely confined to gay men and had a lower mortality rate, the new outbreak is caused by a more lethal variant, clade 1. This strain is 10 times more lethal and now poses an increased risk to vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.
Infectious disease experts such as Boguma Titanji of Emory University and Jean Nachega of the University of Pittsburgh have criticized the global response, which focuses on a 2022 population outbreak while ignoring the current surge in Africa. The new strain appears to have spread in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and then moved to neighboring countries, where it is now affecting the wider population. The first case of monkeypox infection was diagnosed in Sweden.
