China has become the leader in the number of unicorn startups. For the first time, China has overtaken the United States in this indicator: the former had 46 “unicorns” in 2024, while the latter had only 36. The United States continues to hold the lead in the total number of startups with an enterprise value of more than $1 billion.

For the first time, China has surpassed the United States in the number of new “unicorn” companies – private companies whose enterprise value exceeds $1 billion, Kommersant reported on the basis of a study by HSE experts.
In China, 46 startups have received unicorn status by 2024, while in the US there are only 36 such startups. However, the US leads the total number of unicorns registered in the country (781 startups).
In 2022, 340 companies in the world received unicorn status, in 2023 it was 229, and in 2024 only 127. This indicates that the growth rate of the number of unicorns has been declining for several years in a row.
There are 350 “unicorns” in China, 135 in the European Union, 91 in India, 69 in the United Kingdom, 28 in Canada, 27 in Singapore and Israel.
