The affected accounts, associated with a group known as Storm-2035, were used to create fake news articles and content on social media. These messages covered topics such as the US presidential election. The team used ChatGPT to create misleading headlines and comments on social media in an attempt to influence public opinion.

The campaign created five fake news sites posing as “progressive and conservative” outlets.

Ben Nimmo, principal researcher at OpenAI, stressed the need for caution but noted that while such “influence operations” do exist, their true impact on public opinion is unclear.
