At the Kurgan Thermal Power Plant, a unique mobile laser complex (MLC) was used for the first time in Russia to dismantle old high-rise metal structures. Developed by scientists from Rosatom’s Troitsk Institute of Innovation and Thermonuclear Research, the installation became part of a large-scale project to dismantle two cranes with a height of 40 meters and a lifting capacity of up to 32 tons.
Dismantling was not easy: experts used laser cutting to carefully remove the structures to avoid damaging neighboring CHP facilities. Preparation and dismantling took just three days, made possible by MLK’s high precision and safety.
Kirill Ilyin, Director General of Rosatom Institute of Science, emphasized that MLK allows remote cutting of metal structures up to 300 mm thick from a distance of up to 200 meters. He noted that the technology can also be used for cutting under water and eliminating the consequences of man-made accidents. In this project, MLK proved its effectiveness and safety due to the fact that all work was carried out at a safe distance of up to 100 meters from the construction site.
