Russians are increasingly positive about biometric payment technologies, such as face and fingerprint recognition. According to Sber’s SML study from January to June 2024, the number of negative reviews about bio-purchases decreased from 13% to 8.4%, and the number of negative reviews about “Pay with a smile” decreased from 9.2% to 7.7%. At the same time, the share of positive reviews increased – 23.1% for bio-purchases and 30.3% for “Pay with a smile”.
Analysts note that discussions on social networks are increasingly focused on the convenience and popularity of new payment methods. Users actively share information about where they can use Pay with a Smile, discuss their impressions and the latest news in this area. Sberbank added that with the spread of technology, memes have emerged, which indicates an increase in interest and recognition.
According to Dmitry Malykh, Sber’s senior vice president, trust in biometric payments continues to grow. “People are getting used to new payment methods. We see the user base expanding from young people to senior citizens,” he said. Sber, which had planned to reach 5 million monthly active users by the end of the year, is now approaching 1 million.
