The study, conducted by EPFL’s HexHive lab and led by cybersecurity expert Matthias Payer, included system tests that revealed serious flaws in Android’s security architecture. The findings suggest that attackers could have continued access to sensitive data as long as the compromised device remains in use.
The study also hints that similar vulnerabilities may exist on iOS as well, due to its closed ecosystem, although less public research has been done on the iPhone.
The researchers notified manufacturers, giving them 90 days to correct the problems before releasing the study results to the public.
