Microsoft is trying to make Windows a simpler, more functional operating system, even if that means removing some popular functionality among users. A company support page confirms that the Control Panel is in the process of being replaced by the Settings app in the future.
The company’s statement reveals that “Control Panel is in the process of being transitioned to the Settings app, offering a more modern and simplified experience.” This is Microsoft’s old plan, but it appears to be being put into action now.
However, the company states that: “The feature hasn’t been fully ported to Settings yet, “for compatibility reasons.” However, Microsoft recommends users access the new app whenever possible, either from the Windows menu or by using the Windows + R shortcut.
Control Panel has been available since 1980
It’s not entirely clear why the company wants to discontinue the Control Panel. The idea is to simplify the operating system. However, since the Control Panel has been around since the 1980s and is still very useful, swapping out so many features could confuse users.
The Control Panel provides easy access to hardware categories, connected devices, customization, security, and system information. However, the segment best known to users is the removal of programs.
Microsoft has been considering removing the Control Panel since 2011, and although there’s no date yet, it only now seems to be becoming a reality. It’s worth noting that the company recently confirmed that Paint 3D will be phased out.
