The regulator said it has been looking into complaints about the dominant position of these tech giants in the app market for several years. Smaller players have complained about the dominance of the companies’ digital product stores.
However, due to the passing of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCCA), the agency has stopped investigating the case as it has lost its “administrative priority”. This is because the CMA has new powers to investigate cases if Apple and Google (and other companies) are granted “strategic market status”.
