Cortisol, a stress hormone, is closely linked to the body’s circadian rhythms that regulate sleep and wakefulness. The model showed that increased cortisol activity can disrupt the body’s internal clock, causing spontaneous desynchronization. This is characterized by sleep disturbances, fatigue, and appetite changes.

The researchers also found that in minor disturbances the body can compensate for disruptions in sleep rhythms, but in severe disturbances this ability may be impaired.
