This is the 60th anniversary of the day BoseSo the company is celebrating with a worthy creation: a set of diamond-encrusted Bose Ultra Open headphones worth more than $9,000. The glittery buds are unique and not for sale. Instead, Bose is giving them away to one lucky person: the winner of a diamond gift contest.
Is this an obvious marketing ploy to draw attention to the audio brand? Sure, but it’s also a way to boost sales of the Bose QuietComfort Ultra, Ultra Earbuds, and Ultra Open Earbuds in a new, limited-edition “Diamond Collection” product color. Every Diamond Collection purchase on bose.com from August 26 to September 16 will earn you one entry into the contest (maximum three entries per person).
Bose didn’t say how many of each model were made in the Diamond Collection color, only that they would be available “while supplies last.”
As unusual as a set of diamond-studded earbuds is, the decision to give the Ultra Open Earbuds a more gem-like look makes sense. The Ultra Open earbuds are designed to be worn all day long, and the shape of the clip places them on the side of the ear, where they already look like earrings, even in the less shiny versions. The open design means you don’t have to remove them to communicate.
Bose says it has only produced one set of Diamond Ultra Open headphones and has no plans to make or sell more.
Bose worked with a third-party jewelry designer to make them, though it didn’t say who. The earphones are made with 1.77 carats of lab-grown diamonds (color F/G, quality VS) and 3 grams of 14-karat gold. The total case weight is 19,184 carats, and it uses the same lab-grown diamonds of the same color and quality as the buds, plus an additional 93 grams of 14-karat gold.
