Nikkei Asia reported that the move underscores Apple’s determination to establish supply chains outside China and diversify manufacturing, as well as move away from geopolitical uncertainty. It noted that India’s supply chain has improved significantly over the past few years.

Previously, China produced the latest and most expensive iPhone models, while India only took orders for older or budget models. However, Apple is looking to improve the resilience of its “non-China” supply chain, which has led to increased iPhone production in India.

Around 30 million iPhones were assembled in India in 2023 and around 18 million units are expected to be assembled in the first half of 2024. These smartphones are not only supplied to the Indian market but are also exported abroad, primarily to the US. Big brands like Apple are looking to expand into the Indian markets and India is emerging as a major smartphone assembly location outside of China.
