South Korean police have accused Telegram Corporation of complicity in sexual crimes. An internal investigation has been launched against the messenger, Yonhap news agency reports.

According to the agency, local police are reviewing eight Telegram bots that create deepfakes and are also looking into group chats that create and distribute compromising materials.
Law enforcement received 88 reports of deepfake use from August 26 to 29. As a result, they were able to identify 24 suspects.
As Woo Jong-soo, head of the National Police Agency’s investigation headquarters, said on September 2, Telegram does not provide account information or other data necessary for investigation. According to him, other countries, including the United States, are also facing this attitude from the company.
He added that South Korean authorities are doing their best to conduct an investigation and also have their own methods for doing so.
Local police intend to cooperate with investigative authorities in France, where the messenger’s founder, Pavel Durov, was arrested at Paris airport on August 24.
The case against the businessman in France was opened on July 8 and contains charges of 12 crimes against an “unidentified person.” The billionaire had to pay 5 million euros to be released from prison under “judicial supervision,” but is prohibited from leaving the country.
