Following this, two Japanese panel suppliers, Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp, will be excluded from the US corporation’s phone business. These companies had a combined 70% share of iPhone displays about 10 years ago, but then only provided displays for the iPhone SE when Apple switched to OLED displays on premium models. And in this option, the dominant producers are South Korean and Chinese companies.
Apple, as the publication’s sources say, is placing orders for OLED displays for the upcoming iPhone SE from Chinese tech group BOE and South Korean LG Display. This likely signals the end of LCD displays on iPhones, as the 2025 SE model will also have an OLED display, along with the more advanced and premium Pro models.
Samsung Electronics produces about half of the OLED displays for the iPhone, LG Display has a roughly 30% share and BOE has a 20% share. Neither JDI nor Sharp make them, so their supply of iPhone LCDs will cease once older models using them are discontinued.
Apple is preparing for a big presentation, which will take place on September 9 at 10:00 Pacific time (21:00 Moscow time). The broadcast will take place on the Apple Events website and in the Apple TV app. It will also be available on YouTube.
