The bulk of this volume is due to a major incident recorded by Roskomnadzor, which resulted in 500 million rows of data being compromised. However, the monitoring service does not specify the origin of the leak.
According to the company’s report, online retail is leading the number of data breaches. It accounted for 30.8% of all incidents recorded in the first half of the year (compared to 19.6% the previous year). Small online stores were primarily affected by their poor level of information security.
The number of industrial breaches increased to 5.5%, up from 3.7% last year. There is also an increasing proportion of data breaches from small and medium-sized businesses, which is associated with insufficient investment in information security.
InfoWatch analysts attribute the rise in the number of leaks to the tense geopolitical situation and massive attacks on Russian businesses and the public sector. They also note hybrid attacks, in which external attackers collaborate with internal employees.
More than 99% of leaks in Russia are intentional, while accidental leaks accounted for just 0.5% of incidents in the first half of 2024, compared to 1.5% the previous year.
