Before reading, those who are interested can read the first two paragraphs of this article. They contain information about the composition of our “family travel group”, about what kind of preparation for a family trip I did in advance and why, as well as information about the “structure” of the material in this article.

Thursday is the seventh day in St. Petersburg.

That day, we had three “big” objects planned, but it turned out that we managed to visit two more unplanned objects. It was the most intense day of the ten we were in St. Petersburg.

In the morning we were already at the Gorkovskaya metro station and moved only on foot all day. Fortunately, all the objects were close by and we didn’t have to use public transport.

1. Planetarium

The planetarium is located about a ten minute walk from the Gorkovskaya metro station. The way to it is through the Alexander Garden.

Being with a child in St. Petersburg and not visiting the planetarium is a crime. But the most interesting thing is that not only my daughter, but also my wife and I were delighted to visit the planetarium and see the program.

The planetarium is open every day, seven days a week.

Programs (popular science) in the star room typically start from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The last session starts at 19:30. The duration of the program is approximately fifty minutes – one hour.

You can get acquainted with the schedule of Planetarium programs for the desired date and ticket prices on the official website.

Since we were near the Planetarium an hour and a half before the start of the first program, having bought tickets, in order not to lose time, we visited the first of the unplanned objects, which happened to be next to the planetarium (more on that below).

This was the third planetarium our family tour group visited. So there was something to compare to (even if this is purely our subjective opinion). Before that, we were in the Moscow and Tashkent planetariums. St. Petersburg, for us, “took” the second place, after Moscow.

2. Wax Museum

The Wax Museum in Saint Petersburg is located near the Admiralteyskaya metro station. It was in our plans, but on another day. And then it turned out that next to the Planetarium is their branch, which opens at 10 o’clock. We barely had an hour and a half left before the start of the program at the Planetarium. In order not to waste time in vain, we went to the museum. This was our first unscheduled object for Thursday. As they say, the stars aligned.

We went and did not regret it. Basically, the museum exhibits wax figures of famous people (rulers, politicians, soldiers, artists). But there were rooms with fairy-tale characters and dinosaurs.

I don’t know if there is now a branch of the wax museum near the Planetarium, but back then it worked on weekdays from 10:00 to 22:00 and on weekends from 10:00 to 23:00.

3. Artillery Museum

The full name of the museum is the Military History Museum of Artillery, Engineering Troops and Signal Corps. The museum is located between the Planetarium and the Peter and Paul Fortress.

The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (the ticket office closes at 5:00 p.m.).

Free days: Monday, Tuesday and every last Thursday of the month.

You can find more information about the museum and its opening hours on the official website.

I really wanted to visit the museum (firstly, I love the military theme, and secondly, the visit was planned before the trip). But suddenly my girls declared that they were not at all interested in the exhibition of this museum and refused to go to the museum, giving me the right to visit it alone. On a family trip, any visit should be interesting (albeit to one degree or another) for everyone. That’s why I didn’t go to the museum. In front of the museum there is a large exhibition of artillery, rockets and armored vehicles from Petrovsky’s time to the present day. Inspection of equipment outside the museum walls became the compromise that suited everyone.

I was sincerely delighted with the inspection, and was very pleased. The girls, a bit bored, were wandering next to me. I sincerely thank you for your patience.

4. Peter and Paul Fortress

The Peter and Paul Fortress is located on Hare Island and the way to the fortress from the Artillery Museum will take only a few minutes.

The entrance to the territory of the fortress itself is open every day of the week from 9:00 to 20:00. But the museum located on the territory of the fortress is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. Wednesday is a free day in all the museums.

You can check the opening hours of the museums and obtain additional information on the website of the Peter and Paul Fortress.

It is best to buy a combined ticket. Barks the right to visit five museums (exhibitions), which are located on the territory of the Peter and Paul Fortress. It is, firstly, cheaper, and secondly, you will see the exhibitions with a guide (this is interesting and informative and cannot be compared with an independent tour).

During one of these excursions, a funny incident occurred that we all laughed about for a long time. For those who are not interested, skip the next paragraph.

Our group follows the guide. In front of us are two charming girls. The weather is sunny, but quite cool, only fourteen more. At this time, my mother from Shymkent calls me and complains that they are unbearably hot, and the temperature on the thermometer outside the window, which is in direct sunlight, plus fifty-six degrees! She gave me a bit of a cold and I envied my mother (although +56 is still so hot and also quite hard to bear). At this time, the girl walking in front of her spoke on her smartphone and loudly says to her friend that now they are hot in Moscow plus twenty-four, not like in this cold St. Petersburg. And then it became fun for me. They would be surprised if they knew that the real heat is now in the south of Kazakhstan, and in Moscow it is hot (maybe not even cold). When, after the tour, I told my girls everything, we all laughed together and for a long time. Everything in life is relative!

5. Museum of Cosmonautics and Rocket Technology. Vice President Glushko

It turned out that on the territory of the Peter and Paul Fortress there is a museum of cosmonautics and rocket technology. The Museum of Cosmonautics became the second unplanned object we visited that day.

The museum is open on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday – from 11:00 to 18:00.

Free day – Wednesday.

For more information on the museum’s work, click here.

The museum exposition is devoted to the history of Soviet and Russian cosmonautics. The museum itself is small, but the exhibit is interesting and informative.

And not far from the museum there is a cozy cafe-dining room with delicious food and quite affordable prices. Where we were safe and had something to eat before visiting the museum.
