The researchers studied a mycoprotein derived from fungi. The vegan meat alternative has been shown to promote muscle growth during resistance training.
The work consisted of two stages. In the first, 16 healthy teenagers followed a three-day diet in which they ate protein-rich meals made from meat or mycoprotein. The scientists measured their metabolic rates. In phase two, 22 other healthy young adults completed a 10-week progressive resistance training program on a high-protein omnivorous diet or a mycoprotein-rich vegan diet.
There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of muscle mass gain and strength. People who followed an omnivorous high-protein diet showed a 2.6-pound increase in muscle mass. One group of vegans gained almost 3 pounds.
