Launched earlier this year, the printer was deployed to the International Space Station (ISS) by astronaut Andreas Mogensen. The printer achieved its primary purpose by producing a metal mold in the microgravity environment of space.
The printed part and three additional samples planned for subsequent experiments will undergo careful analysis after return to Earth. Two samples will be studied at the ESA Technical Centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands, another will be analysed at the ESA Astronaut Training Centre (EAC) in Cologne, and a fourth will be sent to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
Additive manufacturing in space offers a solution for creating the necessary components, repair equipment, and design tools without the need for frequent replenishment from Earth.
