If you are a perfectionist, you may feel under constant pressure to meet impossible standards, perhaps to avoid feelings of shame or not meeting others’ expectations.

With unhealthy perfectionism, you will try to meet others’ expectations and prove your own worth.

If you struggle with unhealthy perfectionism, you’re probably constantly afraid of failure. When you feel like you’ve messed up, you start blaming yourself. You might have an inner critic: a voice that tells you that failure is proof that you’re not good enough.

There are a few steps you can take to break free of this mindset. First of all, realize that your self-worth is not based on your accomplishments. You are worthy of love just for being you. If you have a hard time believing this, you may want to seek the support of a therapist.

Second, consider if there are impossible rules that you force yourself to live by. For example, you may not allow yourself to make mistakes, or you may always try to be the best. No one can be that perfect, so instead create new, more realistic rules.

Third, strive for greater success. There’s nothing wrong with that, just make sure you really want it. Your motivation shouldn’t be to impress someone or prove your worth to others.

Fourth, when you feel like you’re failing at something, don’t take it as a sign that something is wrong with you. Instead, think about what you can do differently next time.
