The scientists used ion channel activation in mice to isolate neurons that cause sneezing and coughing. They found that the BAM 8−22 compound activates the MrgprC11 ion channel, which triggers sneezing. Removing neurons with this channel resulted in infected mice not sneezing, confirming their hypothesis.
A similar approach was used to identify neurons that cause coughing. The researchers found several such neurons in the trachea, and removing them prevented coughing.
The team now plans to investigate what happens once these neurons are activated and whether similar neurons exist in humans. This could lead to the development of more effective treatments for the symptoms.
