It looks like Netflix will be ending its app support for certain versions of iPhones and iPads running iOS 16. Lines of code found in the service’s app on the MacRumors website suggest that users of smartphones like the iconic iPhone X will have to resort to other streaming services.
The code was found by Aaron Perris, a contributor to the site, during a new app update that will be rolling out soon. As such, users of the following devices will no longer be able to update the Netflix app and will have to live with an older version. Check out the list:
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone X
- iPad Pro (1st generation)
- iPad (2nd generation)
In other words, users of these devices will continue to have normal access to the Netflix app, but they will not be able to receive the updates that the company periodically prepares.
iOS 18 is coming soon
The time period when this should happen is no coincidence. Apple has announced that it will release iOS 18 for download next Monday (16), so it makes sense that Netflix would want to end support for an older version of Apple’s operating system.
This practice is fairly common in the software world, whether for compatibility reasons or as a way to pressure consumers into purchasing new devices.
There is no official date yet for when the new Netflix update will be released, but it is expected to happen in the next few days.
