To avoid side effects or drug interactions, certain medications should not be taken at the same time.

Antibiotics. Magnesium can interact with some antibiotics, including quinolone antibiotics such as declomycin (demeclocycline), Vibramycin (doxycycline), Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Levaquin (levofloxacin). For best absorption of medications, take them at least two hours before or 4 to 6 hours after taking magnesium supplements.

Diuretics. When taken with magnesium, it may reduce or increase the loss of magnesium through urine. This will also neutralize the effect of the additive.

BisphosphonatesTake it at least two hours before or after taking magnesium. The time depends on the type of bisphosphonate.

Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medicationsIf taken for a long time (more than a year), they may cause a decrease in magnesium levels in the blood.

Zinc. Studies have shown that taking very high doses of zinc along with magnesium can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb and regulate magnesium levels. To avoid this, take these supplements separately at different times of the day.
