Magnesium has been linked to better sleep, heart health, and anxiety. A recent study published in the European Journal of Nutrition also found that people with low levels of this mineral were at higher risk of chronic degenerative diseases.
A team of scientists from Australia took blood samples from 172 middle-aged adults and tested their levels of magnesium, homocysteine, folate and vitamin B12. They also looked for signs of DNA damage.
High levels of homocysteine in human blood have been linked to an increased risk of DNA damage, which experts say can lead to the development of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and neural tube defects.
Study results showed that participants with lower magnesium levels tended to have higher homocysteine levels, and vice versa. Those with higher magnesium levels also had higher levels of folate and vitamin B12.
