The key findings of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) are detailed in two reports cited by Reuters. Flipkart also appears in the report. Neither Amazon, Flipkart nor the CCI have officially commented on the news.
According to the report, Amazon had six partners who received preferential treatment (marketing services, warehousing, etc. at a minimal price) and Flipkart had 33. CCI also claimed that Amazon and Flipkart used their own infusions — in this case foreign investment — to provide such benefits in India.
Both Amazon and Flipkart had an ecosystem “where no seller other than the preferred one could survive,” CCI said.
Competition has also been hampered by Amazon and Flipkart’s exclusive supply partnerships with leading developers of smartphones and other tech devices. This has “hurt small retailers.”
In June this year, the country’s antitrust commission ruled that Apple used its dominant market position and “committed abuse.” The investigation into the iOS developer continues since 2021.
