The summit was overshadowed by Microsoft games division CEO Phil Spencer’s announcement that he would lay off another 650 people. This followed an earlier layoff of 1,900 employees, both of which were likely related to Activision’s acquisition of Blizzard. The layoffs drew criticism from labor advocates, including the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the AFL-CIO.

Microsoft celebrated a “groundbreaking neutrality agreement” with the CWA in October 2023 that aims to “improve cooperation between the company and its employees on unionization issues.” Despite this, the recent layoffs have sparked a backlash, with the CWA condemning the layoffs as “heartless” and unnecessary.
