In its latest update, made available through the Google Play Beta program (2.24.20.3), WhatsApp will allow users to tag their contacts when posting statuses. The functionality, already well-known to Instagram users, has been made available to beta testers of the app.

Mentioning people is a seemingly simple function and consists of simply selecting and tagging a user in the statuses. To do this, simply access the status publishing area and look for an at icon (@) in the lower right corner, next to the send button. There, select the desired person and publish the material.

When the tagged person receives a notification, they will receive a notification and, much like Instagram, a chat message with the person who tagged them. However, since their name or number is not visible to other viewers viewing the content, only the person tagged in the status will know they have been selected.

Tagged users will not be displayed in posts.

People will always be informed

Another interesting detail is that all people who are marked will receive notifications, regardless of whether the person who posted the status has been removed from viewing options. This also applies to users who use a higher privacy setting, ensuring they are always notified regardless of context.

If the tagged person finds the content important or relevant, they can still quickly share it using a specific button. However, the identity of the original post creator will be hidden.

The status labeling feature, which is currently available to some users of WhatsApp and Google Play test programs, is expected to be available to everyone soon.
