Sales of used passenger cars in Russia at the end of August almost reached the record set three years ago. The results were not better until 2021. Market participants attribute this to the expectation of an increase in prices due to the upcoming increase in the recycling rate and the key rate of the Central Bank in October. Kommersant writes about this.

In August, sales of used cars in Russia increased by 1.6% year-on-year and by 2.5% compared to July, up to 560,000 units (Autostat data). Before that, July was a record – 546.2 thousand used cars. In September, according to experts, the upward trend of the market will continue.

Autostat expert Sergei Udalov said that used car sales are driven by expectations of rising prices due to a likely increase in the price of recycling collection from October 1 and a possible increase in the key rate of the Central Bank. It is these factors that influence the cost of new cars and, according to market laws, increase prices in the used car segment.

Lada remained the leader in the secondary market in August: sales in the used car segment increased by 17.7% to 136.3 thousand units. This is the best result in all respects. Among foreign cars, the Japanese Toyota takes the lead – 57 thousand cars.

In the ranking of models for seven consecutive months, the Lada 2107 occupies the first place, according to the results of August, the Kia Rio is in second place and the first among foreign cars. The top 3 is completed by Hyundai Solaris, with Lada 2114 and Ford Focus slightly behind in popularity.

In September, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation decided to resume programs to stimulate demand for cars. In 2024, 6.5 billion rubles will be allocated for preferential car loans and 8 billion rubles for the preferential leasing program.
