Today, an air quality sensor has been developed based on this research that could help combat pollution on Earth. Lunar Outpost Inc., working under NASA’s NextSTEP program, has created a device called Space Canary. The device was part of the environmental control system on Lockheed Martin’s prototype Lunar Orbiter Habitation Module.
The sensor, renamed Canary-S (Solar), is now used to monitor air quality on Earth. It measures levels of various pollutants, including dust particles, carbon monoxide, methane and sulfur dioxide. Using solar power and a built-in battery, Canary-S transmits data to the cloud every minute, where the information is available for analysis.
