Andor is the highly anticipated prequel to Rogue One, coming soon to Disney+. Diego Luna will reprise his role as rogue spy Cassian Andor and will undoubtedly explore the darker side of the Star Wars universe.

When is Andor’s release date?

Disney has confirmed that Andor will be coming to Disney+ on August 31. Twelve episodes are expected to air weekly, similar to The Mandalorian.

Now it has also been confirmed that the series will have a second and final season, which will presumably lead directly to the beginning of Rogue One.

“This is the second season, but for me it’s the second half of the novel,” showrunner Tony Gilroy told Vanity Fair. “This first season is about him becoming a revolutionary, and the second 12 episodes take him into Rogue One.

series trailer

Disney released a trailer for fans of the universe at its Star Wars Celebration event in May:

What is the plot of Andor?

The new show will be a spy thriller based on Diego Luna’s character, Cassian Andor, and will take place five years before Rogue One during the early days of the battle between the Empire and the Rebellion.

It was revealed in a Vanity Fair article that Cassian’s home planet of Andor had been destroyed and that he initially did not want to join the Rebellion at all. The series will follow her journey to become the one who finally becomes Rogue One.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Luna expressed her enthusiasm for the prequel’s story, “You know the ending, but you don’t know how it happened.”

According to GamingBible, the series will be based on personal stories rather than big shows. It will be inspired by the espionage, suspense and adventure genres.

Series creator Tony Gilroy confirmed to Empire magazine that the series will jump a year every three episodes, meaning that Andor will cover most of the Star Wars timeline.

Who are the cast and crew?

As you may have guessed, Diego Luna will return as Cassian Andor. He will be joined by Genevieve O’Reilly, who will reprise her role as Mon Mothma, leader of the Rebellion.

They will be joined by Stellan Skarsgård, Kyle Soller and Denise Gough, according to Variety. The latest addition to the cast is Good Omens actress Adria Arjona, according to Deadline.

There have been more rumors about who could join the cast. Stellan Skarsgård mentioned in a radio interview that she acted alongside Forest Whitaker, who plays the role of Saw Guerrera. Additionally, The Direct reports that villainous Orson Krennic (played by Ben Mendelsohn) will also return.

Alan Tudyk will also voice the Imperial droid K2SO again, but we’ll likely see him before Season 2. Luna also revealed that there will be more “familiar faces,” so we can expect to see more of the Rogue One cast.

As for working behind the camera, Tony Gilroy (formerly of Rogue One) will serve as executive producer and director. On the writing team we’ll have brother Tony Dan (of Nightcrawler fame), Stephen Schiff (of The Americans fame), and Beau Willimon (of House of Cards fame).

Deadline also reported that due to pandemic-related travel issues, Gilroy did not direct the first three episodes. Instead, Toby Haynes took over the duties in his absence. Haynes previously worked on Black Mirror, Sherlock and Doctor Who.
