On Tuesday, Nokia announced that it had signed a five-year deal with Norwegian mobile operator Ice to upgrade and expand its 5G wireless network infrastructure across the country, according to foreign media reports.

Under the contract, Nokia will provide equipment from its comprehensive, energy-efficient AirScale to support the various frequency bands. The company noted that around 3,200 base stations will be upgraded and another 3,900 new stations will be deployed.

According to Nokia, the rollout has already started and will continue until 2026.

In March 2022, the multiservice company Lyse completed the acquisition of Ice. Ice currently has more than 700,000 customers and its 4G and 5G network covers 95% of Norway.

The company initially launched 5G services in Oslo in November 2021. In September 2021, the company also received a national license to operate networks in the 3.6 GHz band.

Nokia is currently in fierce competition with Ericsson and Huawei for market share in 5G services. The company has reportedly signed public 5G deals with carriers like T-Mobile, Telia, and SoftBank.

Furthermore, Nokia is also working on 6G networks. In June, CEO Pekka Lundmark said that 6G would be commercially available around 2030.
