Redwood Materials, founded by Tesla’s former chief technology officer JB Straubel, will recycle end-of-life batteries at two facilities in Nevada and South Carolina, which are located near BMW factories.

The company did not disclose which materials would be recycled, but the contractor previously recycled cathode and anode materials, the key components of lithium-ion batteries. Redwood takes those materials and turns them into high-quality components that can then be used to make new batteries for electric vehicles. Nearly all of those materials are ultimately recovered and returned to the supply chain.

After receiving the batteries from its partners, Redwood reportedly begins a chemical processing process in which elements such as nickel, cobalt and copper are separated and refined.
