An official OpenAI account on X (formerly Twitter) was hacked on Monday (23). The profile known as OpenAI Newsroom (@OpenAINewsroom, on X) was used to promote a fake page to steal cryptocurrencies from visitors.
“We are happy to announce $OPENAI: the cryptocurrency that bridges AI and blockchain technology,” the hacker wrote in one of the posts. “All OpenAI users are eligible to claim a share of the first $OPENAI units,” he added.
According to the publication, owning an OpenAI token in your own digital wallet will guarantee access to the company’s future experimental programs.
But, This is all just a scheme to steal Bitcoin from unsuspecting users’ wallets. The “$OPENAI” token is not available and upon entering the attached link the user is redirected to a fake OpenAI page offering options to sign in with the wallet associated with the device.
You The fake posts and fake website remained up for about an hour until it was removed from the profile. Afterwards the account apparently returned to normal.
To the website BloombergOpenAI confirmed the hack on its official account. The company is investigating what caused the issue. On the same day, OpenAI reportedly asked its employees to strengthen the security of its own accounts.
Another attack on OpenAI accounts
This is another incident of hacking into OpenAI accountsIn July 2023, the official profile of the company’s technology director Mira Murati was hacked on X and the same fake token “$OPENAI” was released.
In 2024, the profiles of chief scientist Jakub Pachocki and researcher Jason Wei were also hacked and used to publicize cryptocurrency theft schemes.
now It is unclear whether the attack is a security issue on OpenAI’s side or a structural issue on X’s part.In any case, it is always important to be wary of advertising about cryptocurrencies coming from public interest profiles on networks.
