The decision stems from a lawsuit filed by Mojo Mobility in 2022 over failed licensing negotiations in 2013. Despite the breakdown in negotiations, Samsung continued to apply Mojo’s patented technology to Galaxy devices, including phones, smartwatches and headphones, without obtaining a license.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas ruled that Samsung’s infringement was willful and could result in triple damages. The jury initially awarded $67.5 million in damages and assessed a recurring royalty of $1.50 for each Galaxy phone sold with the affected technology. However, due to confusion over the copyright structure during the trial, the judge ordered a new hearing to reassess damages.
