Bandai Namco said sales of the device, which was popular in the 1990s, are expected to double in 2022-2023.
The revived version of this virtual pet retained its appearance, but received more features: now you can connect to Wi-Fi, play with friends and download new items.
Tamagotchi brand manager Pria Jadeja said the revival of the device had attracted both adults and children who had not previously played with such devices. The first Tamagotchi store even opened in London, although not at the height of its popularity in 1996.
Nostalgia plays a big role in the new wave of interest, with fans like Emma (from YouTube channel Emmalution) starting to collect modern versions as a way to reminisce about their childhoods.
Some users also say that playing with virtual pets helps take their minds off the world’s current problems.
