This technology could be an important step in preserving the genetic information of humans, animals and plants for the future.

The five-dimensional crystal created using nanostructured glass and laser technology provides incredible durability and resistance to extreme temperatures of up to 1000°C.

To test the crystal’s capabilities, scientists recorded the entire human genome (about 3 billion DNA letters) on it, with particular attention being paid to creating a “key” that would explain how to use the recorded information.

This visual guide provides information about the chemical elements and structure of DNA so that future researchers, whether human, machine or alien, can decipher the genome.

The drive containing the genome is currently stored in an old salt cave in Austria under the management of the Memory of Humanity archive.
