It has long been known that olive oil and other unsaturated fat sources are beneficial for heart health. They also reduce cholesterol levels, blood pressure and the risk of heart disease. Leah Barron, MD, certified physical therapist and nutritionist at The Baseline Lifestyle Co., told Verywell.

A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that people at higher risk of heart disease had worse cognitive function than people at lower risk. This means that foods that are good for the heart also benefit the brain.

Scientists also believe there may be a link between olive oil and a reduced risk of death from dementia. However, it is still not a superfood. A diet rich in unsaturated fats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains is much more important. It is known to support heart and brain health.
