According to clinical psychologist Margarita Proshina, emojis serve a projective function, reflecting the internal state of the sender and replacing non-verbal elements of communication such as tone of voice and facial expressions. He noted that when perceiving emojis, the same brain regions used to process emotions in face-to-face communication are used.

Evgeny Kharitonov, editor-in-chief of Ferra.ru, noted that the use of emoji creates a certain image of the interlocutor, which may not always correspond to reality.

Kharitonov also noted that millennials often limit themselves to simple emojis such as “smiley bun” or parentheses to convey emotions, and that the prevalence of parentheses-shaped emojis is typical only for CIS countries.
