Tourists who were banned from leaving Russia due to errors in their passports are winning cases against authorities, said Association of Russian Tour Operators (ATOR) vice-president Arthur Muradyan. Interfax quotes him.

“Of course, the situation has now improved significantly compared to what it was at the beginning of the summer, when more passports were confiscated due to technical errors. And some of the victims, there is no other way to call them, requested legal protection and are already winning lawsuits against federal executive authorities,” Muradyan said at a press conference.

According to him, there are several precedents for refunding the full amount of lost tickets. “And in some places they even returned a good moral damage. But we must understand that only a small percentage of those whose passports were confiscated will seek judicial protection,” added the ATOR vice president.

At the end of 2023, new rules for leaving Russia began to apply. Border guards now have the right to confiscate a foreign passport on the spot for various reasons, including worn appearance, technical and spelling errors, among others.

The first cases of seizure of foreign passports became known in December last year. Then, according to ATOR, one document was withdrawn due to a typographical error in the name, the second due to a missing letter in the city name.
