Jacqueline McCleary, a professor of physics at Northeastern University, notes that all the effects of being in space can be described by the acronym RIDGE. Radiation stands for Isolation and Confinement, Distance from Earth, Gravitational Fields, and Hostile/Closed Environment. All this can affect a person.
Additionally, people in space are constantly under microgravity. So they actually always seem to fall into the elevator.
McCleary said that astronauts who stayed in space for even a short time got space sickness. Symptoms include dizziness, facial swelling, and digestive problems. This is because the fluids in their bodies constantly accumulate and move.
Research has shown that astronauts who stay in space for several months may encounter more serious problems. Those who have been in space for about a year return to Earth with changes in gene regulation, gut microbiome, arterial size, thickness of eye parts (which can affect vision), and cognitive functions. At the same time, over time, their muscles atrophy and bone density decreases due to the decrease in gravity.
Additionally, the feeling of loneliness and isolation experienced among people living in space can cause depression and anxiety, sleep problems, and a sharp increase in cortisol levels.
