The State Duma approved in the first reading a bill that will introduce fines of 3,000 to 5,000 rubles for dangerous driving. In the event of a repeat offense, drivers will be deprived of their license for a period of one to three months. The document was published in the legislative support system.

The chairman of the State Duma, Viacheslav Volodin, stated that in the second reading the deputies will finalize the bill “to toughen” the penalties. In his words, the number of traffic accidents in Russia began to grow: in 2023 there were 132.5 thousand, 4.5% more than in 2022. 14.5 thousand people died in accidents (+2.3% compared to to last year).
“It is clear that it is necessary to tighten the responsibility of reckless drivers who deliberately violate the rules of the road,” Volodin emphasized.
The term “dangerous driving” was introduced into traffic rules in 2016, but there is still no corresponding penalty, he noted. Dangerous driving includes, but is not limited to, obstructing overtaking, braking suddenly (if not necessary to avoid an accident), and failure to maintain a lateral gap.
