Following the announcement of WordPad’s discontinuation in September 2023, the new Windows 11 update (24H2) has removed the text editor from the operating system. The legendary tool, available on the platform since Windows 95, will be replaced by the traditional Microsoft Word with a paid subscription.
Although the update is the last lick of lime in WordPad’s body, it is not the end of the world for most users. With the rise of free text editors like Google Docs, many people are using these solutions to write their content.
WordPad, on the other hand, is still occasionally used by some users, like me, for simple tasks like searching for characters or searching for an area outside of Docs to save text.
Classic but not very useful
Despite the end of the tool, this editor has always been considered an “ugly duckling” in Windows. Lack of features, outdated commands, design that looks like it’s stuck in the 1990s, etc. Because of this, most people put the software aside. In fact, this is one of the reasons that led Microsoft to declare its end.
On the other hand, Microsoft Word remains solid and strong on all fronts, whether as an application installed on machines or as a solution via the cloud. However, the company’s software requires a license or can be tried for free for a few days, but the Docs version is free to use.
Anyone who wants to keep WordPad on their computer should not update Windows 11 to version 24H2, as this can cause blue screens and other problems on computers.
