The European Commission sent requests to YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat demanding information on the operation of recommendation algorithms.

The regulator wants the company to become more transparent to users under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). They will have to submit data on standards, alignments based on their algorithms, recommendations and measures taken to expand ideological content.

The European Commission turned to TikTok and was surprised to discover that this other platform was a coordinated effort to spread misinformation aimed at influencing elections and public debate. The request also requires clarification of what actions are being taken to protect the platform from manipulation by attackers.

All three companies must respond to the regulator’s requests by November 15. This data helps assess whether the DMA platform’s requirements for transparency of the operation of algorithms and the risks associated with their use are met. In case of refusal to cooperate or incomplete answers, the company may impose a fine.
