The new regime will allow for the prosecution of companies and individuals that “undermine the fundamental values of the EU and its member states, their security, independence and integrity, as well as international organizations and third countries,” he said.

The Council highlighted that with the help of the measure, the alliance will be able to counter several “hybrid threats”, including the disruption of electoral processes and the functioning of democratic institutions and the sabotage of economic activities of public interest.

Those affected by the new sanctions will face an asset freeze and residents of EU countries and European companies will be prohibited from providing them with finance. In addition, sanctioned persons may be prohibited from entering the alliance’s territory.
