On November 10, several users of the social network reported that they had received notifications from X offering to try Grok for free. TechCrunch’s editor received the same notification and confirmed that the social network, in particular, is testing a free version of the chatbot in New Zealand.

Currently, only those with a paid X Premium subscription have access to Grok. Its cost in the USA starts from $8 per month. X Premium owners also have access to encrypted private messages, post editing, and other features.

In August, X introduced an updated version of the Grok-2 chatbot. The neural network can reason, communicate with users and program. Independent AI testing sites ranked Grok-2 among the top five chatbots in the world, along with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the Financial Times wrote.

Grok developed xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, which the entrepreneur created in July 2023. Its employees include people from DeepMind, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Twitter (renamed X), and Tesla.
