Britain agreed to give up control of these islands, which it had controlled since 1814. Historically, the islands were ceded by the French to the British, and in 1965 Britain separated them from Mauritius, creating the British Indian Ocean Territory and forcibly removing people from Chagos to build a US military base.

The .io domain was introduced in 1997 and has become popular among technology and cryptocurrency startups. Although the British government received a share of the revenues from this area, the Chagossians claimed ownership. With the recent agreement to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, the status of the .io domain is now uncertain.
