Regulators say the company exploited its dominant position and entered into anticompetitive deals with other companies such as Apple, where Google’s search engine is the standard choice for devices.
This allows the search giant to maintain control over the market and process large amounts of data, which is considered a violation of antitrust laws.
Google representatives called the Justice Department’s plans radical and warned that they would have negative consequences for consumers and U.S. competitiveness.
The regulator is also promising to provide more information next month. If the case moves forward, it could become one of the largest antitrust cases since the Microsoft split in the early 2000s.
