This discovery came about by chance when assistant professor Marco Lo Presti, who took part in the research, noticed that a mesh-like material was formed while cleaning glassware with acetone. Researchers found that by combining dopamine with silk fibroin solution they could significantly speed up the erection process, creating fibers with exceptional tensile strength and adhesion.
The device can produce fibers that can lift objects up to 80 times their own weight. Scientists successfully demonstrated the system’s capabilities by lifting various objects, including a steel bolt. Although synthetic fibers are less durable than natural spider silk, the technology opens opportunities for applications in medicine, construction and other fields.
