This change complies with legislation that prohibits sellers from using terms such as “purchase” or “purchase” without clearly stating that such transactions convey a license rather than ownership.

The law, signed by Governor Gavin Nuss on September 26, 2024, requires sellers of digital products to disclose in plain language that their products are licensed and include links to terms and conditions. However, Valve decided to comply with the requirements immediately, without waiting for the law to come into force next year.
